For more than 10 years, ATD Fourth World has been present in Tanzania, reaching out to the most excluded people in order to build friendship and trust, and to support them in their initiatives to fight extreme poverty.

We live in a world which is organised in such a way so as not to have contact with the poorest people, while at the same time it wonders why so many of its inhabitants feel excluded. (…) ATD Fourth World is a link that allows people to come together, to think together and to act together.
Eugen Brand
Director General of ATD Fourth World International Movement

In our last internal annual report, the perspectives for 2009 focused on three points :

  • to allow our friends to truly be the main actors of the creation of ATD in Tanzania,
  • to better support, through our activities and projects, the most disadvantaged people in the challenges they face,
  • to find the financial, human and administrative means to consolidate the future of our action in the country.

The report which follows details both the activities undertaken on all three of these points during 2009, as well as the perspectives for the movement’s work in Tanzania in 2010. Major steps have been taken towards realising these goals, but obviously there is always more work to be done.

Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated.
To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty.
