ATD Fourth World Haiti program 2011-2014
Haïti
- “Yon vwa pou pep la” (One Voice for the People): the ATD Fourth World contribution in preparation for the International Conference of Donors for a New Future in Haiti.
- In the midst of difficulty, sharing knowledge is a time for joy, meeting others, and getting involved
- One month after the earthquake: Families in extreme poverty struggle against injustice, but their efforts backfire
- "They have to have a voice in their future, in the future of Haiti"
The team wants to assist in global actions centered on medical and psycho-sociological assistance as well as reinforcing community links between populations poorly impacted by international aide, such as the neighborhoods situated above Martissant (including Grand Ravine) where the team has been present for the past 25 years.
Before the January 12, 2010 earthquake, the ATD Fourth World had had regular relationships with about 600 families. Since then, we have met almost 3,000 families and are continuing to have close ties with about 1,500 of them.
In partnership with local organizations (Saint Michel Center and FOKAL [1] as well as international ones such as Action Against Hunger, Worldwide Entrepreneurs, International Medical Aid, etc.), the ATD Fourth World team will continue to support housing reconstruction programs, access to work and training as well as activities which generate income. The core objective of the team will continue with access to health care and education as well as programs targeting little children and their parents (“Welcome baby” and pre-schools). The objective is also to allow a greater number of people to have access to prevention, education, health and health care (in particular by expanding the Health Card), with a greater collective responsibility for the health of the entire population.
In the context of increased vulnerability and violence for young adults, accompanying this under the age of 25 population means increasing health care, but also taking specific action to access education, develop self-esteem and promote peace.
In the Grand Ravine neighborhood and in the Fourth World House where, each day between 30 and 80 families participate in activities, a daily welcome, an open ear and presence for inhabitants helps support these families in their long term projects as well as isolated situations leading to increased fragility: repairing and rebuilding houses, income generating activities, participation in paying rent or tuition. The Fourth World Meeting Committee will continue to debate this type of support in order to keep peace in the community.
