Tanzania

ATD Fourth World has been active in Tanzania since 1999, with a team of permanent volunteers in Dar es Salaam. Links have been forged with people involved in the struggle against poverty throughout the country.
Our main areas of activity are:
- Making contact with the people suffering the most extreme poverty, recognising the bonds with them which are already in place, and supporting them to access basic rights (school, healthcare, training etc.).
- Helping the most disadvantaged to gain access to culture by means of street libraries.
- Enabling the poorest people to speak out in public by organising meetings between people living in great poverty and those from other sections of society.
- Encouraging the poorest people to speak out in organisations involved in the country’s social, economic and cultural development.
- Making 17th October an important opportunity for speaking out in this way.
- Communicating and sharing Joseph Wresinski’s vision of the world and of the struggle against poverty with our friends and contacts in Tanzania (through newsletters, publications etc.).
- Suggesting different ways for young Tanzanians to take action alongside the most disadvantaged people, including becoming a permanent volunteer.
