Senegal

ATD Fourth World has been active in Senegal since 1982. Our members work mainly in Dakar and its suburbs. Groups also exist in Thiès (in western Senegal Colibantan and Kédougou (both in eastern Senegal).
Our activities revolve around three main priorities:
- To plan and carry out activities which will help to change the real living conditions of the very poor, with emphasis on the active involvement of the members of ATD Fourth World.
- By testing out different frameworks for participation, to gain an understanding of the necessary conditions for the participation of people from all walks of life in building a fairer society.
- To raise the profile of ATD Fourth World in Senegalese society by stimulating partnerships (e.g. financial or political partnerships) so as to promote the recognition of the very poor as leaders of the struggle against poverty.
This ATD project is conducted with the help of four working groups (on communication and training, partnerships, skills, and street education) and a co-ordinating committee.
Regular meetings of people living in poverty, supporters and partner organisations are held at ATD Fourth World offices. Discussion topics have included rights, citizenship, solidarity with the most socially excluded, and education for all.
Every 17th October, in the presence of partner organisations and officials, poor people bear witness to their own courage, and to the initiatives they are taking in co-operation with others to smash poverty.
ATD Fourth World is a member of the National Committee for Children, and a member of several groups, in particular CONGAD (Conseil des ONG d’Appui au Dévelopment, Council of NGOs in Support of Development) and COSAED (Collectif des Structures d’Appui aux Enfants en Difficulté, Network of Agencies for Children and Youth in Difficulty).

Press release. February 12 2011
Within each fight, however rightful it may be, does our solidarity extend to he or she who is the most excluded? The success of these combats depends on them being undertaken based on the needs of the very poorest people and working with them.Storytell with me
